Why look at life in weeks?
An 80-year life is a little over 4,000 weeks. Seen as a single page of small squares, that number feels both large and surprisingly finite. The Stoic philosophers called this kind of reflection memento mori, “remember that you will die”: not to make us gloomy, but to remind us that our time is limited and worth spending well.
Seneca put it plainly in On the Shortness of Life: life is long enough, if we know how to use it. Read more: Memento mori: remembering death to live well.
How to use it
Enter your date of birth and choose a life length. The filled squares are weeks you have already lived, and the highlighted one is this week. Then ask a simple question: what would make this week, one small square, well spent?
The life lengths are round numbers for reflection, not predictions. Nobody knows how many weeks they have.
